Figure 1 - without TA Demo Recorder

Figure 2 - with Ta Demo Recorder (optional)

It seems some folks are having a rough time with installing TA:ESC and/or running into problems with specifc units not working such as upgrades. In order to clear up this issue, the following are very specifc instructions on how do get ESC working along with the demo recorder (with is optional and not required) - see pics below

To begin, you should have installed the following files prior to ESC in the following order.

- Total Annihilation
- Core Contingency
- Battle Tactics (Optional)
- Rev31.gp3 Patch
- Do Not Install the six extra Cavedog units! If you installed them, remove them to another folder - they will conflict with TA:ESC and are already included.

If your original install of TA does not display v3.1 on the intro screen when starting TA, begin the install over again and do it in the order above.

Now to ensure ESC works perfectly, lets start with the bare minimum specs needed for a perfectly clean install of TA with TAESC. Refer to the first pic below of a sample TOTALA folder. Note that a number of files that were included with TA originally have been removed - most of these files were unused readme docs as well dial-up game services that are no longer used. The six extra Cavedog units (Necro, FARK, etc.) have also been removed - these are not needed with ESC and will conflict with the mod. You can safely run TA and ESC with just the files shown in the first pic and nothing more. If you are having issues, start by making your TOTALA folder just like the first pic.

NOTE: dplayx.dll and dplayx.map are very important and included with TA:ESC. Make sure that these files match these exactly - dated 8/19/2006, 4:39PM, 264KB and 448KB respectively. Under no circumstances should these files be changed overwrtten, etc.

When installing the TA Demo recorder, 2 additional files will be added to your TOTALA folder - ddraw.dll and TADEMO.ufo (Refer to pic 2 below). Both of these files will allow you use the Demo Recorder which is highly recommended. After installing the Demo Recorder however - Make sure you copy over the dplayx.dll and dplayx.map files from you ESC install. Remember that these two files must be the ones included with ESC and not the ones included with Demo Recorder.

Lastly, make sure your totala.ini folder is the one included from the ESC install as well - no exceptions.

Naturally, you can add map and feature files for maps, but do not include any other units or mods in your TOTALA folder when playing ESC. If you save a game in Skirmish, a save game folder will also appear in your TOTALA folder which is fine as well. Remember, the six extra cavedog units must be removed from your TOTALA folder. When in doubt just make your identical to the pics below.
